Preparing for The Road...

I have packed a cooler, loaded the car, grabbed my GPS and am ready to set off. Oh wait wrong road...

Since I have a deep love for Cormac McCarthy *rolls eyes*, I have been procrastinating about starting this book. In fact I am pretty sure I swore I would never read another book that Cormac even looked at after being forced to read All the Pretty Horses in college. Yet, I wonder why? Why did EW choose it and make it number 1? Why did it win the Pulitzer? Why did Oprah choose it? Well Oprah was probably paid by the publisher so that answers that question.

After asking all of these questions and reading two other books, I decided I would take a page from my college days and do a little research just to further delay the project. So I took a look a some roads....

A lonely road.

A residential street....I wonder who lives here :)

Intersection including a stop light...

Double decker road...

Hmm so I guess we have learned that there are lots of different types of roads. So now I guess I will start reading....

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Page 1

Oh wait I forgot one more thing...

A mix tape or in this case a playlist, it is the 00's after all. I can't start my reading without the proper tunes.

More to come...

Book #1 Update

I am venturing forth to the EBR public library tomorrow to lay claim to The Road. I realize that it isn't at my local branch, but I am going to see if they can procure a copy for me, since I saw it was still available at other locations.

I shall be accompanied by my midget assistant who loves libraries. Sadly, since the atmosphere is so quiet, Bronwen finds it imperative to liven things up a bit. Perhaps I'll tape some of the bedlam, should it occur. It can get embarrassing.

Wish me luck!

One Step Closer

Dear Bat Brother,

I applaud your valiant efforts at procuring my release, but I assure you I do not need your help. Being that I am the more menacing of the two men-of-Bat (check out scary shadow as proof), it will be only moments before I escape this den of horrors and continue to kick your bat butt at all manor of competitions, including but not limited to:
1. Trivial Bat Pursuit
2. Batminton
3. Batgammon
4. Charades
5. Battleship

I have already taken one of my captors hostage and plan to tickle her mercilessly before my return.

Do not worry brother, I have not been harmed.

BatMan here... I have taken over this blog to tell you a very tragic story and to make my demands!

I have recently found myself transported to this lowly human's home via this strange box. I apologize for the photo quality my BatCamera was covered with dust.

While the human wasn't looking I seized her girly pink computer to check my BatMail when I was shocked to see the following photo:

How is this possible. I was not in front of this tall ceramic structure. There was only one possible answer....
My twin brother had been kidnapped!!!

So I quickly penned an email demanding the release of my brother. I am including a copy of the email here:

Dear Holder of my twin brother,
I have taken over the house at 1103 Grant Ave. Please return my brother to this address. I am sending two pictures. One to prove you have my brother and one to prove to you the great weapon I have to defend against you if I don't receive my brother.
You better heed my warning!

BatMan

Photo of my great weapon

I am now awaiting a reply. If I don't see my brother soon. I will continue to take over this blog!

Jen's Perspective

Yes, I am adding my 2 cents worth from the beach. I am a maniac, I know. I think I also need to qualify the rules of our 100 books project, which will no doubt stretch itself past 100 books. I propose that we also include the caveat that if we hate, loathe, despise the book and/or begin to have suicidal thoughts upon reading the first 80 pages that we are allowed to stop and go on to the next book. I had an English professor who always said to give it 80 pages. I have no idea why, but I suppose if you can't find an interesting plot or redeeming quality within the first 80 pages, then it might be hopeless. I should have followed this advice with Vanity Fair, but alas, it was a school assignment. To this day I regret that I lost about 15 hours of my life that I can never regain.

Your thoughts?

The 100 New Classics Project...

What the heck is it?
Recently I was excited to see that the wonderful people at Entertainment Weekly used their time and extensive brain power to come up with their 1,000 New Classics List. Now being the nerdy pants kind of gal that I am, I directly flip to the the book list. You can view the list by clicking here. While trying to determine what kind of pop culture guru I am, a light bulb appeared over my head. Why not call the nerdiest person I know and issue a challenge. Below is a transcript....

Me: *bring bring*
Jen: Hello Sister!!!
Me: Did you get your Entertainment Weekly yet?
Jen: Let me check...
Bronwen: nanananana
Jen: Yes.
Me: Want to be nerdy with me and read all 100 books and maybe blog about it together.
Jen: Sure
Bronwen: buh bye

And so a project was born.....

So if you want to impress your friends with your nerdiness, join us in reading and blogging...

Once certain people return from a vacation we will begin. Meanwhile, I will read lovely pink fluffy books before I start The Road. So get your copies now and put on your taped glasses, suspenders, and high waters.

Official Project Rules:
Some books will not be read due to the fact we have read them several times. We will still blog about our feelings if the book belongs on the list or not. Each project member gets 5 passes on book. There is no way I can read Cold Mountain trust me I tried. We at this blog are not responsible for loss of eye sight or carpal tunnel caused by heavy books.

Why...Why you ask? Your questions answered here.

Q: Why start a blog?
A: Why not?
